1.1. Introduction

This subject offers to the student the first contact with the block of contents of Psychology that he/she will have to study in his/her degree. In this case, the characteristics of children aged 0-6 from the sensory, motor, cognitive and linguistic perspective are presented from the view of developmental psychology. The aspects related to socio-personal development will be addressed in the second semester in the subject of Developmental Psychology II, which together constitute the block of introduction to the development of the degree.

2.1. Learning goals

The student, to overcome this subject, must demonstrate the following results…

 

1: Describes children's behavior from 0 to 6 years old in the following areas: physical, sensory-motor, cognitive and linguistic.

2: Explains how psychological development occurs in these areas from psychological theories of the evolutionary field, paying special attention to individual differences in how this can occur without implying a problematic deviation.

3: Identifies different rhythms of development in specific areas: sensory, motor, cognitive and linguistic.

4: Predicts how the psychological development will be for a particular case (with a conventional or unconventional rhythm) from the general theories and the information provided.

5: Relates the performance of different agents, family, school, peers, with the process of development optimization.

5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on active participation, case studies, teamwork etc. that favors the development of communicative skills and critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practical activities, practice sessions, autonomous work, tutorials, and academic guidance.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to:

- Lectures (3  ECTS): 30  hours.

- Practice sessions (2  ECTS): 20 hours.

- Autonomous work ( ECTS): 87 hours.

- Tutorials (1  ECTS): 10  hours.

- Assessment (0,3 ECTS): 3 hours.

 

Lectures: the professor presents theoretical contents.

Practice sessions: they can involve discussion and presentation of case studies, practical work outside the classroom (field work or visits), and seminars.

Autonomous work: students do tasks such as autonomous study, reading of the course book, preparation of practice sessions and seminars, and summative assignments.

Tutorials: professors' office hours can be used to solved doubts and to follow-up students’ work.

Assessment: final examination

5.3. Syllabus

Introduction to Psychology. Psychology of child development. Development of the child in the context of the life cycle in its main areas (physical, sensory, motor, cognitive and linguistic), based on his/her maturation, adaptation and learning periods. Biological and environmental aspects that influence the development of the individual.
